VME

VME Overview
VME Technology adheres to the open system architecture definition of real-time, modular embedded computing systems. Intensive development and field deployed systems have proven out the concept of VMEbus. The developers within the VMEbus community are committed to technology excellence through evolutionary changes.
Being one of the early pioneers of VMEbus, Kontron can look back over 25 years experience in standard and custom VME products. As an active member of the VITA (VMEbus Trade Organization) and driving force of the Freescale Design Alliance, Kontron is leading the way to a brighter future in VME technology.
VME Tech Highlights
ANSI/VITA 1 is the original VMEbus specification for 8-, 16-, 32, and 64-bit parallel-bus computer architectures that can implement single and multiprocessor systems. The mechanical specifications of boards, backplanes, subracks, and enclosures are based on IEC 297 and IEEE 1101.1 specifications, also known as the Eurocard form factor. ANSI/VITA 1.1 now supports a 160 pin connector, a P0 connector, geographical addressing, voltages pins for 3.3V, a test and maintenance bus, and EMI, ESD, and front panel keying per IEEE 1101.10.
ANSI/VITA 1.5, 2eSST is an extension of the ANSI/VITA 1-1994, VME64 and ANSI/VITA 1.1-1997, VME64x standards. It defines a new transfer protocol, based upon source synchronous concepts, that permits the VMEbus to operate at rates up to 320MB/s. As technology improves, this rate can be extended to higher levels.
ANSI/VITA 31.1, Gigabit Ethernet on VME64x, defines a pin assignment and interconnection methodology for implementing a 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet switched network on a VME64x backplane via a P0 connector. This is the first generation of serial switched fabric solutions implemented in VMEbus backplanes. ANSI/VITA 31.1 on P0, as well as several other serial schemes, all work with the VME32, VME64 and VME2eSST configurations.
XMC (VITA 42) defines an open standard for supporting high-speed, switched interconnect protocols on the popular PMC form factor. It adds connectors for the high-speed interconnects while retaining the main features of the PMC specification, staying within the height. It provides better definition for carrier cards, and allows for optional configuration without PMC connectors using only the high-speed connectors.

Textile Machines
Grossenhainer was looking to reduce the mechanical part of their spinning machines by one third. The key to this innovation: A VMEbus system from Kontron and four Lenze drives connected through CAN.
The production of thread demands exceptional precision: The cotton band has to be stretched by a factor of 10, strengthened and then evenly rolled up on a spool. The key demand of this process is an even thickness of the thread: A typical cotton thread contains 120 fibers across its diameter. A deviation of just 10 percent results in inferior thread.

Vibration Resistant Laser Control System
Laser machines combine precision mechanical engineering of high dynamics with high-powered laser technology. They are highly productive systems for cutting, welding, and for surface treatment. Flat sheets, tubes, three-dimensional and also rotationally symmetrical work pieces can all be processed by these machining centers. Inside the rack is a controller based on a standard PowerPC, 3U VME CPU running under OS9 and a customized bus interface between the proprietary and the VME bus. The customized controller was realized without an external bus (e.g. Ethernet, field bus, etc.) due to the request of fast real-time at signal utilization (Jitter < 50ms) for the very accurate laser beam control. The inside VME bus system is used to allow the propriety system to use the advantages of a modular system like flexibility in communication, upgradeability, and scalability.

Train Management System
The AGC (Autorail Grande Capacité) from Bombardier is part of the latest generation of regional trains for local and long-distance travel. Kontron developed the hardware of the Train Management System (TMS), the Graphical User Interface (GUI) and the Remote I/Os of the AGC.
The conductor and maintenance personnel use the GUI to access the TMS in real time. The TMS acts as the central system of the train and is also a gateway in between several networks like WTB, MVB, LON, CAN, Ethernet and wireless connections offering remote connections. The goal is to have a fast and transparent data transfer of the train’s core functions and to manage the
passenger oriented comfort systems. The Remote I/Os are developed by Kontron to offer an optimized economic solution for I/O’s decentralized management on a network like MVB-, or Ethernet.
The EN50155 standard for electronic railroad applications places heavy demands on the Kontron hardware. The standard assumes that electronic systems on trains will need to operate 24 hours a day for 30 years, or approximately 250,000 hours, without failure. This means that train management systems must be designed to withstand the toughest environmental conditions: extended temperature ranges (-40°C to +85°C), humidity, vibrations and power fluctuations. Even heat build-up and therefore energy absorption have to stay within narrow ranges: only passive cooling technologies are permitted.
